    A variable metric forward--backward method with extrapolation

    Forward-backward methods are a very useful tool for the minimization of a functional given by the sum of a differentiable term and a nondifferentiable one and their investigation has experienced several efforts from many researchers in the last decade. In this paper we focus on the convex case and, inspired by recent approaches for accelerating first-order iterative schemes, we develop a scaled inertial forward-backward algorithm which is based on a metric changing at each iteration and on a suitable extrapolation step. Unlike standard forward-backward methods with extrapolation, our scheme is able to handle functions whose domain is not the entire space. Both {an O(1/k2){\mathcal O}(1/k^2) convergence rate estimate on the objective function values and the convergence of the sequence of the iterates} are proved. Numerical experiments on several {test problems arising from image processing, compressed sensing and statistical inference} show the {effectiveness} of the proposed method in comparison to well performing {state-of-the-art} algorithms

    CCS communication has proven a tough challenge, particularly for the difficulty in raising interest for the technology, which is still unknown to the majority of the population, and for the complexity of conveying information about its potential for reducing emissions. In this paper we present a research based effort for bringing CCS nearer to people, through visual material developed taking into account emotional needs related to the technology. The production of a short introductory film on CCS is illustrated and its testing with a sample of 700 high school students

    Evaluation of the correlation between oral infections and systemic complications in kidney transplant patients: a retrospective pilot study

    BACKGROUND: Data regarding the efficacy of the dental clearance required prior to kidney transplantation (KT) for preventing post-transplant complications is controversial. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate a possible correlation between any untreated oral infectious foci and the onset of systemic complications in KT patients. METHODS: Patients scheduled for regular check-ups during the post-transplant period were visited at the C.I.R. Dental School in Turin, Italy. Patients were asked to bring orthopantomography (OPT) acquired prior to transplantation to compare the possible presence of untreated infectious foci at the time of transplantation with the time of their post-transplant visit. Patients were then divided, according to the evaluation of the OPT obtained prior to the transplantation, into two groups according to their dental status prior to the transplant. “Group Infected” was comprised of patients with no dental clearance, and “Group Clear” included patients with dental clearance. The medical records were then retrospectively reviewed for the evaluation of any systemic complications that occurred after transplantation. The following medical complications were considered: fever, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, systemic infections, kidney rejection, and death. Complications were divided in two groups: early complications, which occurred within 100 days of transplantation, and late complications, which occurred more than 100 days after transplantation. RESULTS: A total of 77 patients were enrolled in the study. Group Infected was composed of 19 subjects (25%), while Group Clear was composed of 58 patients (75%). In Group Infected, 13 (68%) patients developed complications within 100 days of transplantation, and 11 (58%) did so after 100 days. In Group Clear, 31 (53%) patients had complications within 100 days of the transplant, and 23 (40%) did after 100 days. Patients in Group Infected had a statistically significant increase in episodes of fever (p = 0.03), compared to Group Clear, with a higher relative risk (RR) of 3.66 in the first 100 days after transplantation. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the present retrospective pilot study, and based on the results, a correlation between the absence of dental clearance prior to KT and a higher RR of developing a fever within the first 100 days post transplantation was highlighted. The present results encourage doctors to continue research on the topic, which remains controversial. Further prospective studies are required to confirm the results of the present study

    82. Cftr Gene Targeting in Murine ES Cells Mediated by the SFHR Technique

    Small Fragment Homologous Recombination (SFHR)-mediated targeting is a gene therapy strategy where a specific genomic locus is modified through a target exchange between a small DNA fragment (SDF) and genomic DNA. Here we demonstrate that SFHR can stably introduce a 3-bp deletion (corresponding to |[Delta]|F508) within Cftr (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator) locus in the genome of mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. SDFs (about 6.4|[times]|105 molecules per cell) carrying the |[Delta]|F508 mutation were transfected by nucleofection protocol. About 12% of transcript corresponding to deleted allele was detected and about 60% of the electroporated cells no longer had measurable CFTR-dependent chloride efflux. The CFTR activity was also analyzed by measuring the chloride efflux by the fluorescence microscopy-coupled digital video imaging system in each ES cell colony, previously loaded with MQAE, a chloride sensitive dye. An average of 4-6 regions for each cell colony was analysed to verify the genotypic homogeneity of each colony. In fact all regions examined in each colony showed a similar significant chloride efflux after PKA activation. Moreover on twelve electroporated ES colonies analysed, eight were successfully mutated (Cl- efflux not significantly different from zero) while four colonies showed Cl-efflux CFTR-dependent not significantly different from the untreated ones

    The document represents the first result of the study conducted by the research group "SDGs and business reporting" and aims to be the starting point of a process for corporate awareness towards sustainable development objectives. The document reveals our country commitment on Agenda 2030; a commitment that involves the entire "Italian system" in pursuit of the 17 sustainable development goals, through the active role of Italian companies as operators. Hence, it not only creates economic value on sustainable development but also it sensitize other companies, end users and the community in general. Although the results depict a sustainable development goals reporting in becoming and not entirely conscious, they provide inputs for entrepreneurs, directors, managers, regulators, consultants, etc. who, for various reasons, are the actors in a process of profound business change that is affecting the corporate reporting and disclosures. The document provides, in this context, useful hints to a better understanding the new corporate reporting direction; indeed, reporting is increasingly affected by an accountability process and responsibility towards both internal and external stakeholders

    A novel soft tissue prediction methodology for orthognathic surgery based on probabilistic finite element modelling

    Repositioning of the maxilla in orthognathic surgery is carried out for functional and aesthetic purposes. Pre-surgical planning tools can predict 3D facial appearance by computing the response of the soft tissue to the changes to the underlying skeleton. The clinical use of commercial prediction software remains controversial, likely due to the deterministic nature of these computational predictions. A novel probabilistic finite element model (FEM) for the prediction of postoperative facial soft tissues is proposed in this paper. A probabilistic FEM was developed and validated on a cohort of eight patients who underwent maxillary repositioning and had pre- and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans taken. Firstly, a variables correlation assessed various modelling parameters. Secondly, a design of experiments (DOE) provided a range of potential outcomes based on uniformly distributed input parameters, followed by an optimisation. Lastly, the second DOE iteration provided optimised predictions with a probability range. A range of 3D predictions was obtained using the probabilistic FEM and validated using reconstructed soft tissue surfaces from the postoperative CBCT data. The predictions in the nose and upper lip areas accurately include the true postoperative position, whereas the prediction under-estimates the position of the cheeks and lower lip. A probabilistic FEM has been developed and validated for the prediction of the facial appearance following orthognathic surgery. This method shows how inaccuracies in the modelling and uncertainties in executing surgical planning influence the soft tissue prediction and it provides a range of predictions including a minimum and maximum, which may be helpful for patients in understanding the impact of surgery on the face

    Acute dyspnea in Emergency Department: point of care ultrasound in the diagnosis of atrial sarcoma

    We describe a rare case of a 65-year-old patient presented to Emergency Department for acute dyspnea. Traditional diagnostic work-up was done and the emergency physician promptly performed a bedside point-of-care ultrasound. A giant mass in the left atrium was detected with impairing of mitral valve function. The patient was then sent to cardiac surgery department with a final diagnosis of high-grade cardiac sarcoma
